Today, in Grihshobha’s University of Life segment, we have Mukta Kapoor from the marketing and advertising industry. Mukta is the founder-owner of Yuna Weddings & Events. Based on her experience, Mukta will share some advice and guidance for students interested in the advertising and marketing field:
What school subjects form the basis of advertising and marketing?
I truly believe that advertising and marketing isn’t about one perfect major. It’s about understanding people and communicating well. English, psychology, economics, and business studies definitely help. They teach how people think, behave, and respond. Creative subjects are more important than people think. Literature, art, theater, and debate all help improve storytelling, confidence, and presentation skills.
Looking back now, I feel that growing up and studying in various small towns in Uttar Pradesh taught me as much as I did from books. This way, you learn to understand different people and emotions. This understanding proves to be very valuable later in marketing and communications.
How does college choice change a student’s career?
A college degree certainly changes your perspective, but the environment you experience during college refines you even more. The people you meet, the internships, the conversations, the presentations, the failures, all gradually shape you into a better person. For example, here I learned how bands communicate and, more importantly, how people connect emotionally with experiences.
What are the things to keep in mind while choosing a specialization program?
I think students should first ask themselves a very honest question: What kind of work truly excites me? Many young people choose careers based on trends, pressure, or what sounds cool. But advertising, marketing, and the creative industry require energy, curiosity, and the ability to connect with people. If you don’t enjoy communication, creativity, or socializing, it can be difficult in the long run. Students should definitely consider the quality of the course, internships, faculty, and environment, but they should also consider their own personality. Some people prefer strategy, while others like storytelling, so understanding yourself early on helps a lot. For example, during school and college, I was passionate about organizing festivals, cultural, and musical events, so during my post-graduation, I chose event management.
What is the main role of the university in preparing students?
The most important role of a university today is to make students adaptable to every situation. This industry changes rapidly. By the time students graduate,
By the time we graduate, trends and platforms have changed. Therefore, beyond theory, students need practical experience, self-confidence, and the ability to continuously learn. Universities should encourage students to think independently, communicate clearly, and remain curious. Technology can always be learned, but creativity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to connect with people take time to develop.
How important is building a portfolio in a creative marketing program?
Building a portfolio is incredibly important today because in the creative industry, your work speaks louder than you speak. Students today have many ways to build a portfolio even before graduation. A strong Instagram page, photography, content creation, college festival branding, writing, event work, and small campaigns all count. More than marks, a portfolio demonstrates your own initiative and genuine interest. All the creative people I’ve met weren’t necessarily toppers, but they were constantly creating something new.
What technical and soft skills can you learn with your degree?
Technically, students should understand digital marketing, social media, branding, content strategy, and basic analytics. Students with a creative bent should also understand the digital aspect, as it’s now a core part of the industry. However, soft skills are crucial for your long-term growth. Communication, listening, teamwork, time management, adaptability, and handling pressure are crucial.
In hospitality and events, people especially remember how you made them feel. You may have great ideas, but if you don’t treat people with grace maintaining professional relationships can be difficult, and there’s a huge demand for people who understand both creativity and technology together. Agencies are looking for people who possess a creative mindset and are also comfortable with digital tools, AI analytics, and content strategy. Good digital strategists, performance marketers, and content creators are in high demand.
What are the best career options for entry-level graduates?
Marketing today offers many interesting options for young people, with areas like brand management, digital marketing, experiential events, hospitality communications, luxury marketing, influencer marketing, social media, and content strategy all experiencing a surge in popularity over the past few years. Personally, I believe experiential and hospitality-based marketing has become particularly effective. People today connect more deeply with experiences than with traditional advertising.
Is AI technology a threat to students in this career field?
The industry has completely changed since I started. Campaigns used to last for months. Today, trends change overnight, and conversations have become increasingly digital and instantaneous. But despite all the technology, human understanding remains at the heart of good marketing. Therefore, AI shouldn’t be seen as a threat; it’s simply a tool. Students who learn to use AI wisely will definitely benefit.
